中国社会科学研究院的学者表示，1998年，女生在大学在校生中的比例为38.31%，高校扩招开始后，女生比例几乎每年增长一个百分点，到2009年（50.48%）已经超过男生。
2022年，全国普通本科招生人数为4679358人，其中男生占比仅为37%，远低于女生。这种女多男少的情况近年来持续存在，并且延续到了硕士阶段的性别比例中。
高校男生日益减少并不是出现在中国的偶然现象，而是世界性的趋势。
从入学数据来看，2022年男性仅占首次进入高等教育新生的44%，这种失衡现象在所有OECD成员国家中普遍存在。
